Never wrap the lead or cord around a hand or leg, and always lock it short around traffic, other dogs, or in a busy area rather than leaving it freely extended. Retractable leads suit a dog that already responds well to voice cues and leash pressure, a dog still learning loose lead walking or one that is reactive often does better with a standard length lead and some training work first.
