Both are good foods. Neither will harm a healthy dog. The honest call on which one to feed your dog depends on what you are optimising for. Below is how the call usually plays out on the Pet Depot shop floor.
When we hand someone Stanley's
Stanley's Grain Free is made at GA Pet Food Partners in Lancashire, the same factory that produces a lot of the British premium brands [JOE TO VERIFY: Stanley's manufacturer + facility]. It is single-source protein and grain-free.
We reach for Stanley's when:
- A customer's dog has been itchy, or has had loose stools on a supermarket food, or is breaking out behind the ears
- A customer wants a cleaner label without paying super-premium prices
- A customer specifically asks for grain-free
- Price matters but quality matters more
A 12kg bag of Stanley's Grain Free Chicken sits around €69.95. It is not the cheapest option on the shelf. It is the cheapest option we would feed our own dog.
When we hand someone Royal Canin
Royal Canin is developed with veterinary nutritionists. It is grain-inclusive in most formulas. The big advantage is breed-size and life-stage specificity — there are formulas tuned for small breeds, large breeds, puppies of specific sizes, seniors, weight management, sensitive digestion.
We reach for Royal Canin when:
- A vet has specifically recommended it
- A customer needs a clinical formula (kidney support, weight loss, dental, etc.) — Royal Canin does these properly
- A breed-specific dog (Yorkie, French Bulldog, Maxi adult) does notably better on the matched formula
- The dog is a fussy eater and Royal Canin's palatability has worked before

The honest tiebreaker
If a healthy adult dog is doing fine on either, we do not switch them. The single biggest mistake people make is changing food too often. Pick one, give it four to six weeks, and judge by how the dog actually looks: stool quality, coat condition, energy, weight.
If your dog has a specific condition your vet is treating, follow your vet. If your dog is healthy and you are choosing between these two for the first time, Stanley's is where most healthy dogs end up on the shop floor. Royal Canin is where dogs go when something needs sorting. That is the rough split.
