There is no single best dog food. There is the food your dog will actually eat, that agrees with their stomach, that fits your budget, and that you can reliably get hold of without it going out of stock every other month. That is the food you should buy.

That is not the answer the internet usually gives. The internet usually gives you a ranking of ten brands and tells you brand seven is the best. Pet Depot has been on the shop floor since 2009 in Enniscorthy and since 2014 in Wicklow. The honest version of the answer is below.

Start with the protein

For most healthy dogs in Ireland, a single-source protein with a clear named ingredient ("chicken", "lamb", "salmon") is a sensible starting point. Avoid foods that list "meat and animal derivatives" or "various meats" as the main ingredient. Not because those foods are dangerous, but because you cannot tell what is actually in them, and if your dog reacts badly, you cannot tell what they reacted to.

A guide rule on the shop floor: the cleaner the label, the easier it is to switch back if things do not work.

Decide on grain or grain-free

Grain-free does not automatically mean better. It means no wheat, corn, rice or other cereals. It tends to suit dogs with diagnosed grain sensitivities. It also tends to be higher in protein and more expensive.

If your dog is fine on a grain-inclusive food, there is no clinical reason to switch. If your dog is itchy, has loose stools, or seems to flare up after meals, grain-free is worth trying for six to eight weeks before you draw conclusions.

Match the life stage

Puppies need more protein and fat than adults. Adults need a maintenance formula. Seniors (typically seven plus, earlier for larger breeds) often benefit from joint support and slightly lower calorie density. Most brands make versions for each. Switching life stage formulas is a more important call than switching brands. More on portion sizes and switch transitions in our feeding guide.

Size the bag honestly

A 12kg bag of grain-free dry food costs around โ‚ฌ60 to โ‚ฌ75 at proper retail. It feeds a 15kg dog for roughly six to eight weeks at recommended portions [STAT TO VERIFY: portion days for 15kg dog at recommended feed rate]. A 2kg bag of the same food costs around โ‚ฌ17 โ€” fine for a small dog or a trial run, terrible value for a medium-to-large dog.

Buying the bigger bag and storing it properly (sealed, dry, dark) is almost always cheaper per meal. The only reason to buy small is if you are switching foods and are not sure your dog will eat it.

Avoid the supermarket aisle for daily food

Supermarket dog food is engineered for shelf life and price point. It often passes basic regulatory standards but tends to use cheaper protein sources and more filler. If your dog eats it without issue and you cannot afford otherwise, that is a real answer and we will not lecture you. If you can afford otherwise, the difference in coat, stool quality and energy levels is usually visible inside four to six weeks.
